Cabbage Key

Cabbage Key is pure Old Florida: a dense, low, wetland, mangrove island with towering cypress trees, graceful palms and a Royal Poinciana tree spreading across an Indian shell mound. At the top of the mound sits an early 1930's concrete and coquina shell homestead built by the son and daughter-in-law of the mystery novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart; Ernest Hemingway is said to have been a regular guest. In 1944, Larry and Jan Stults turned the house into the Cabbage Key Inn, now a rustic six-room lodge run by Rob and Phyllis Wells, who bought the island in the mid-70's.

Guest check in at the gift shop, located on the dock next to a sign that invites visitors to “save water, shower with a friend.''  The ducks sit on the grass to the left of the path as the visitors head for the inn at the top of the hill with it’s bar and restaurant.

Even in the early morning the bar is serving drinks. The bar room is dark even on the brightest day, a welcomed relief on a sunny, hot august afternoon. Pine paneled walls with a collection of chairs and tables, dusty bookshelves crowded with tattered novels, a piano advertising for a player and next to it an outboard motor in need of a mechanic.

And dollars, dollars, dollars as far as the eye can see -- thousands of bills taped to the walls and ceiling, covering almost every square inch of the place, each bill bearing the former owner's name and perhaps a message (''Dear Laura: Your heart could melt Antarctica''). The unusual décor dates back to the days when passing commercial fisherman, temporarily flush with cash, would hammer up a few extra bills for a future date when they would show up thirsty and broke.

Today, the crowd consists of local fishing guides, tourists from the nearby islands of Sanibel and Captiva aboard the Lady Chadwick (A head boat), homeowners from Useppa and North Captiva, and maybe a passing celebrity -- Julia Roberts, Walter Cronkite and Sean Connery are among those rumored to have visited in recent years.

And then, of course, there has been the inevitable spotting of Jimmy Buffett, whose song ''Cheeseburger in Paradise'' is said to have been inspired by his many meals at the Cabbage Key Inn in the 1970's. (Similar claims have also been made by plenty of other hamburger joints in Florida but there is a signed picture of Jimmy in the bar.)

There are two dining rooms, one over looking the harbor and the other overlooking the cypress swamp. You can dine on platters fresh seafood including stone crabs (in season) and shrimp, crushed-almond-crusted grouper or marinated shrimp that is grilled over charcoal and served with

a Spanish garlic herb dipping butter.

You can walk along nature trail or climb the 65-foot water tower for a striking view of the neighboring islands of Cayo Costa, North Captiva, and Useppa. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop for a signed copy of Randy Wayne Whites’ book or a t-shirt which has all the typical tourist questions answers on the back.
