Boca Grande (Spanish for Big Mouth)

Located on the Southwest coast of Florida, north of Cayo Costa is  Boca Grande. This barrier island is accessible by car but is easier to get to by boat from North Captiva.

Boca Grand is a quiet community with a  hometown feel of "Old Florida."

Rent a golf cart and travel to the southern most point of Gasparilla Island to the Gasparilla Island State Park. There is a small entrance fee to enter the park and visit the Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. The lighthouse was built in 1890 by the U.S. Lighthouse Service to mark the entrance into Boca Grande Pass and Charlotte Harbor.

The Boca Grande Lighthouse is the oldest building on Gasparilla Island. Lighthouse keepers and their families worked the lighthouse from 1890 until 1956 when the U.S. Coast Guard automated the light. Ten years later the light was removed from the building, which was deteriorating. Lee County took over ownership of the lighthouse and surrounding 13 acres in 1972 and began a long process to save the building. It is now a  working U.S.Coast Guard light and museum of local history open to the public. Barrier Island Parks Society opened the museum to the public in 1999.

Tourism and fishing are the economic base on this tranquil island that boasts no high rises and no traffic lights. Boca Grande Pass is known as the "Tarpon Capital of the World."  Fisherman travel from all over to try to hook up one of these massive fish. You can shop & dine on the main street of Park Avenue or try the South Beach Bar & Grill on you way to the lighthouse.






This is a beautiful Banyan Tree lined street on Boca Grande. While you are driving around on your golf cart see if you can find the Streets named Damficare, Damfino and Damfiwill St.
